Dog Types

Dutch Shepherd Dog

The Dutch Shepherd Dog is a breed of dog. The breed is an old herding breed of Dutch origin. In the old days shepherds and farmers needed a versatile dog, a jack-of-all-trades, with few demands and adapted to the harsh and meager existence of that time.
A medium-sized, medium weight, well-proportioned, well-muscled dog of powerful, well-balanced structure, with intelligent expression and lively temperament. Depending on the coat the breed is distinguished in the following varieties: short-hair, long-hair, and rough-hair.
Very loyal and reliable, always alert, watchful, active, independent, with persistence, intelligence, prepared to be obedient and gifted with the true shepherding temperament. The Dutch Shepherd Dog works willingly together with its owner and he deals independently with any task which is assigned to him. He is neither aggressive nor shy.[15]
He has a strong character and independence passed down from his herding ancestry. In the Dutch Shepherd we have the combination of a “nice housedog” and “afraid of nothing and nobody”, therefore the owner needs to be a strong and fair leader. While there is a potential for doing police work, care should be taken that it is not the sole purpose of the dog overshadowing its overall character.[16]
While there is no perfect dog for everybody, the Dutch Shepherd needs an active life and an owner willing to make a commitment of proper socialization and training.

Labrador Retriever

The Labrador Retriever (also Labrador, or Lab for short) is one of several kinds of retriever, a type of gun dog. One notable characteristic of the breed is their webbed paws, useful for the breed’s original purpose of retrieving fishing nets. The Labrador is the most popular breed of dog by registered ownership in Australia,Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States (since 1991). It is also one of the most popular assistance dog breeds in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom and the United States and many other countries, as well as being widely used by police and other official bodies for their detection and working abilities. Typically, Labradors are athletic and love to swim, play catch and retrieve games, are good with young children, the elderly, and for protection. They are also used as guide dogs to help blind people.

Springer Spaniel

The English Springer Spaniel is a breed of gun dog traditionally used for flushing and retrieving game. It is an affectionate, excitable breed with an average lifespan of twelve to fourteen years. Descended from the Norfolk or Shropshire Spaniels of the mid-19th century, the breed has diverged into separate show and working lines. The breed suffers from average health complaints. The show-bred version of the breed has been linked to “rage syndrome”, although the disorder is very rare. It is closely related to the Welsh Springer Spaniel and very closely with the English Cocker Spaniel; less than a century ago, springers and cockers would come from the same litter. They are used as sniffer dogs on a widespread basis. The term springer comes from the historic hunting role, where the dog would “spring” (flush) birds into the air.
The English Springer Spaniel is a medium sized compact dog. Its coat is moderately long with feathering on the legs and tail. It is a well proportioned, balanced dog with a gentle expression and a friendly wagging tail. This breed represents perhaps the greatest divergence between working and show lines of any breed of dog. A field-bred dog and a show-bred dog appear to be different breeds, but are registered together. In fact, the gene pools are almost completely segregated and have been for at least 70 years. A field-bred dog would not be competitive in a modern dog show while a show dog would not have the speed or stamina to succeed in a field trial.

Jagdterrier

The Jagdterrier is a type of working terrier, originating in Germany, that is used for hunting quarry both above and underground. This breed of terrier is also called the German Hunt Terrier.
Appearance
A typical appearance of a Jagdterrier is black, and tan with the tan being more of a rust colour on the muzzle and undercarriage, a light tan should be avoided and not within the breed standard. It can also be chocolate or liver brown with white markings although the white markings and the chocolate colouring should be avoided in breeding programs along with a brown nose. Black and tan/rust markings should be the goal. The breed standard calls for an animal that stands 33 to 40 cm (13 to 15.7 in) at the shoulders, with females weighing from 7.5 to 8.5 kg (16.5 to 18.7 lb), and males weighting from 9 to 10 kg (19.8 to 22 lb). The coat of a Jagdterrier can be either hairy, smooth or broken. All varieties do shed. The tail is normally (but not always) cropped at 2/3 the natural length.
Temperament
Jagdterriers were developed to be all round hunting dogs. Though often used for quarry that dens underground, especially badger, fox, and raccoon dog, Jadgterriers are also used to drive wild boar and rabbits out of thickets, and to blood track wounded animals, such as deer. Due to their intelligence and adaptability, Jagdterriers can make good pets, but it should be remembered that they are primarily a hunting dog with a strong prey drive.

Jack Russell Terrier

The Jack Russell terrier is a small terrier that has its origins in fox hunting; it is principally white-bodied and smooth, rough or broken-coated. It is commonly confused with the Parson Russell terrier (see the American Kennel Club) and the Russell terrier, which is a shorter-legged, stockier variety. (Within the Fédération Cynologique Internationale the “Russell terrier” is also known as “Jack Russell terrier”). The term “Jack Russell” is commonly misapplied to other small white terriers.
The Jack Russell is a broad type, with a size range of 10–15 inches (25–38 cm). The Parson Russell is limited only to a middle range with a standard size of 12–14 inches (30–36 cm), while the Russell terrier is smaller at 8–12 inches (20–30 cm). Each breed has different physical proportions according to the standards of their breed clubs.
The Jack Russell is an energetic breed that relies on a high level of exercise and stimulation and is relatively free from serious health complaints. Originating from dogs bred and used by Reverend John Russell in the early 19th century, it has similar origins to the modern Fox terrier. It has gone through several changes over the years corresponding to different use and breed standards set by kennel clubs. Recognition by kennel clubs for the Jack Russell breed has been opposed by the breed’s parent societies – which resulted in the breeding and recognition of the Parson Russell terrier. Jack Russells have appeared many times in film, television and print with several historical dogs of note.

Fox Terrier

Fox Terrier refers primarily to two different breeds of the terrier dog type: the Smooth Fox Terrier and the Wire Fox Terrier. Both of these breeds originated in the 19th century from a handful of dogs who are descended from earlier varieties of British terriers, and are related to other modern white terrier breeds. In addition, a number of breeds have diverged from these two main types of fox terrier and have been recognised separately, including the Jack Russell Terrier, Miniature Fox Terrier and Rat Terrier. The Wire and Smooth Fox Terriers share similar characteristics, the main differences being in the coat and markings. They have been successful in conformation shows, more prominently in America than their homeland.

Executive Protection Dogs

Today’s threats require the best protection money can buy. Protection dogs from German Shepherd Watchdogs provide exactly that. There is nothing that protect you better than a properly trained, powerful German Shepherd protection dog.

Executive Protection Training

In order to attract high-end consumers, many German Shepherd internet companies advertise that their dogs are “executive or elite protection dogs.” They claim that their dogs have been specially trained to distinguish between friend and foe, and to attack an assailant without hesitation. In other words, they claim the dog’s superior training allows him to see the gardener differently than a burglar.

Unfortunately, these claims are wildly misleading and irresponsible. If a dog has actually been trained to bite a human (as opposed to a bite suit or sleeve) he is not a dog that we would recommend for a typical family. This kind of dog will see the whole world as a potential target. Without consistent professional maintenance training (about 20 hours per month), that type of dog is a legal liability.

At the other end of the spectrum, many of the so-called “executive protection dogs” are soft animals who have been trained to perform for videos or customer demonstrations. To the novice, these dogs appear tough but, in reality, they have only been taught an obedience routine with the same decoy and in a practiced scenario. They are only comfortable in that setting. In a real life encounter with a perpetrator, though, this kind of dog is likely to turn tail and run.

Our approach is different. We sell confident, powerful, premier Schutzhund titled German Shepherds who are hand selected and tested for their natural protective nature. We don’t teach them to bite humans; however, our dogs won’t retreat from a real threat.

At GSW, we love the animals that we place in our clients’ homes, and therefore, we won’t make unfounded claims which can lead to unhappy situations. You can count on our integrity in every aspect of the transaction.
